A Comment to the Public Service Commission ~ Concerning BP's record in other communities

As a former resident of both Louisiana and Texas, I cannot stress enough how complicated and compromising it can be to do business with British Petroleum.

In March 2005 an explosion at the BP refinery in Texas City (near my hometown) killed 15 people and injured over 170 more. At first, BP refused to take any responsibility for the blast, but later investigation revealed that it was due to BP negligence and safety compromises.

Then in April 2010 the Deepwater Horizon rig blew off the coast of Louisiana killing several and causing billions of dollars of damage to the environment and negatively impacting the jobs of many, many people from Louisiana to Florida. Again, BP tried to sidestep responsibility.

In both cases, BP was found largely responsible for the loss of life and damages incurred.

In the case of the Deepwater rig, it was well-known that it was a problem rig and that BP had been approached with safety concerns, which they ignored.

Though they may bring jobs, the potential damage and their lack of responsibility when problems arise prove that they are less than trustworthy. They do not seem to care at all about how their actions impact others, especially the workers and the environment.
Proceed with caution, if at all, in dealing with them.

The price is not worth it.

Okay, so if we are able to completely discredit British Petroleum,to the point where an Art. X siting board will dismiss their project proposal, where does that leave us, or our good friends and neighboring communities facing an Art. x siting process?

will we be able to discredit every company attempting to generate renewable energy in New York State ?

Wouldn't some other huge corporation be interested in buying BP's interest here if BP's record is the only impediment?

How does discrediting BP assure us of home rule ?

Attacking BP is good, simply because they deserve it, but how does it address the larger issue of the State infringing on our rights to implement our land use laws? Or the central questions surrounding renewable energy, and its impacts on communities?

Is this the tack every community will have to take- discredit the developer? Is this how we deal with ARt.X?

Why aren't we discrediting Cuomo, and the State legislature, for being fascist?

Why are we bombarding the secretary of the PSC, when we should be protesting the legislation that created her responsibility.

Why do we lambast BP on their dismal, immoral, behavior, and continue to request a meaningful dialogue with them in Cape Vincent?

Why do we allow them use of our community resources, when they continue to spout propaganda about their project?

Why don't we end the mystery surrounding a PILOT agreement and make it known officially and publicly-NO PILOT

I don't get it!!
