Neighbors React to Town's Vote to Not Dismantle Wind Turbines

By: Brent Runyon
In the wake of Tuesday’s vote on Question 2, neighbors said the town will either have to purchase their homes or remove the turbines, with no room for compromise.

“Obviously the town wants to keep the turbines up and somehow deal with the abutters,” said Neil P. Andersen of Blacksmith Shop Road, who has filed a lawsuit, a nuisance complaint and been one of the most vocal opponents of the turbines since Wind 1 started turning more than three years ago.

“Well, let’s do it. Deal with us. If you’re going to buy my house, do it. Let me put an end to this hell.” His home is assessed at $525,400 by the town.[Cape News.net]

I went to Google Earth to locate the Wind 1 and Wind 2 turbines in Falmouth, MA (Cape Cod). I found the location of Blacksmith Rd, where a number of people live who have filed complaints and threatened lawsuits. I measured the distances from the nearest turbine to Blacksmith Road and they were all about 1,300 feet, which is also the distance BP wants to place turbines in Cape Vincent. BTW, the turbines at Falmouth that have caused all the problems were the 1.65 MW variety, again similar to those proposed by BP for Cape Vincent.

There are some lessons here that one Cape community can learn from another Cape community. Many people could have serious health problems with the proposed industrial turbine variety and placement here in Cape Vincent. Falmouth even shutdown turbine operation at night, but a number of its citizens were still unhappy. We learned something about decommissioning costs also. The estimated cost was $7 million each.

If BP continues with this fiasco in Cape Vincent, maybe our Cape officials should request the other Cape officials to come to our Cape to tell their Cape's story to Judges Agresta and Villa.

7:36 The Cape community on the St. Lawrence River has already learned the lesson you refer to,ergo the new revised Town Zoning law.

The community who needs to learn the lesson is the community of bureaucrats, promoting wind power, poised to permit industrial turbines, through the ART.10 permitting review process, by over-ruling this zoning law.
