NYSERDA, the state authority that oversees $700 million in energy programs, is facing investigations into its financial practices by both the state comptroller and inspector general.

NYSERDA spends $millions that they lift from your power bill.

You are being taxed in every sense of the word by NYSERDA but they will tell you it is not a tax. They prefer to call it a "charge" - as if somehow that is different.

And they spend this money (your money) on all manner of projects and incentives with minimal accountability to the Legislature.

But the Legislature seems to prefer it that way. That way legislators can avoid some of the tough questions about funding pet projects because they do not have to directly appropriate money for them and spend it from the state treasury. The money just gets skimmed off your utility bill -- like magic -- and gets spent in some very dubious ways.

In addition to the current investigation - the head guy at NYSERDA, Frank Murray, was recently replaced.
