Once in favor of wind power, Yates residents become overwhelmingly opposed

YATES – Residents of this Orleans County town used to be big supporters of wind power, even urging town leaders to go out and recruit a wind developer.

That’s not true anymore...

Everybody knows that back in 2007 and that general timeframe that few if any of the seasonal residents were paying any attention to the fact that the town board was already in the process of encouraging wind developers to come in.

All that changed more recently when wind developers did actually come to Yates and Somerset and seasonal residents first began to comprehend that the value of their investments along the Lake were going to be ruined - completely.

When you talk about "the residents" of these two Lake Ontario shoreline towns it is important to make a distinction between the majority of such residents and the minority of such residents.

The composition of local governments there now reflect the will of the majority. It is unfortunate, however, that the majority tends to be complacent and inattentive until a major threat is right in their face. Could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they had paid more attention to the composition of their local governments all along.

Is there a lesson here for seasonal resident taxpayers of Cape Vincent, Orleans, Hammond and Clayton? You bet there is.

Of course there is a lesson to be learned here, but unfortunately once the immediate threat is removed, such as happened in Cape Vincent, the focus of seasonal taxpaying residents either wanes or is transferred, understandably so, to issues concerning their other residences. There aren't enough forward thinking local resident voters to keep the self-interest ,nepotistic oligarchy from reclaiming political power.

That's reality.
