ReEnergy Biomass Plant at Fort Drum Permitted to Burn Tires and Creosote Soaked Wood
Update ~8:25 AM
Yesterday, there was an article in the Watertown Daily Times concerning the possibility that the Army would be pulling out of their contract with ReEnergy to supply Fort Drum with 100% of their power for the next 20 years. If the Army reneges on their contract this may not be a bad thing. The Re Energy biomass plant that supplies electricity to Fort Drum has been touted as providing clean, renewable energy, but a report released in April of 2014 concluded that burning wood is more polluting than burning coal. If that isn't bad enough ReEnergy's Fort Drum facility was granted a permit by NYSDEC to burn tires and creosote soaked wood to produce electricity. When synthetic rubber tires are burned, the byproducts they produce include highly toxic beryllium, lead, cadmium, selenium, silver, manganese and chromium 6.

The intent of the law was to enable the state to prevent communities from blocking a needed power plant, she said.

Back in the day ~ military radar and wind turbines
Military tests conducted between 2002 and 2005 by the U. S. Air force and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense found that wind turbines located within the line of sight of military radar can adversely affect its ability to track aircraft and other aerial objects.
These findings virtually stopped the development of wind energy facilities across the country.
The FAA halted work on about a dozen land-based wind farm projects that were within the line of sight of any military radar. The Sierra Club sued the Pentagon in June for failing to complete the report within the mandated time period. In an attempt to force the release of the Department of Defense Report two Democratic Senators from Illinois, Richard (Dick) Durbin and Barack Obama, blocked a Senate vote on a Defense Department nominee Robert L. Wilkie and they announced that they would block the nomination of Andrew Steinberg to be Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs until the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a conclusive determination as to whether the operation of wind farms under construction in the Midwest will interfere with radar systems.
Without this certainty, potential investors will fear that their resources could be lost.
This is a matter of public safety not an issue that needs to be expedited by political arm twisting or by court room theatrical maneuvers by wind lobbyists.

important to the Tug Hill region’s undeveloped character and economy, the Land Trust is not

The law was designed to create the illusion that local governments would still have

Governor Cuomo ~
What is good enough for downstate
is good enough for us.
What is good enough for downstate
is good enough for us.
There is a petition being circulated concerning Governor Cuomo’s unfair Renewable energy policy. The petition describes how Governor Cuomo applies a double standard when it comes to Upstate versus Downstate.
To minimize adverse visual impacts from offshore wind development, Cuomo promised wealthy long Island beachfront residents that wind turbines would be so far offshore that, “Not even Superman standing on Montauk Point could see these wind farms .”
But for Jefferson County and other upstate communities Cuomo made no such promise to protect our beautiful Lake Ontario coastline .This is unjust, unethical and just plain wrong.
Governor Andrew Cuomo’s renewable energy policy has to be fair and equal for all - including working upstate middle class residents.
Video transcript: I'm calling on LIPA to approve a 90-Megawatt wind farm enough power to support 50,000 homes. They will not be visible from the beach they will be 30 miles southeast of Montauk.

The shores and waters of the Great Lakes concentrate migrants
moving through the region. Clearly placing large structures in or close
to the Lakes and along these flight lines is questionable practice
and should be avoided. The eastern Lake Ontario region hosts
one bird and three bats on federal lists, as well as a myriad of state listed
species. Placing an industrial wind complex amidst this avian flyway

to the area’s scenic beauty. Preservation of that beauty is one of the
considerations of our work. The economic impacts of large scale industrial
development in sensitive scenic areas, including shorelines and islands,
could be severe. The cost/benefit ratio of projects at these sites
