A typical political appointment, but one the administration could brag about, given his Noble Prize. But what was his Noble Prize winning work? Research on cooling atoms with laser beams, and what that has to do with energy policy escapes us. Neither did he have the administrative experience to lead a cabinet position. He was nevertheless useful for the Obama administration: How can you disagree or criticize a Nobel Laureate?
