BP's CEO Bob Dudley: "We have thrown in the towel on solar"

"We have thrown in the towel on solar," Bob Dudley said after delivering a wide-ranging speech Wednesday.

The solar energy business is growing quickly, but future growth will not include oil giant BP.

At the IHS CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, BP's CEO made it clear the company is done with solar.

"Not that solar energy isn't a viable energy source, but we worked at it for 35 years, and we really never made money," he added.

They would not make any money on wind either if it were not for generous federal tax credits.

Wind is not a "business." It is fundamentally a government program carried out by corporate contractors. Businesses have balance sheets to deal with. Government programs do not.

I think BP should sponsor a global contest inviting people to come up with a design to replace their sunflower corporate logo -- now that they have bowed out of the solar business.

The prize for the person who submits the winning design would be a written promise from BP to leave the winner's town alone for the next 50 years.
